First off, it’s not about the Startup, it’s about the process.
Second, it’s not a Weekend, it’s a lifestyle.
Ann Arbor won StartupWeekend’s “primary election,” garnering the most signatures on its petition to host an event, besting little towns like San Diego, Minneapolis, and Columbus (whose own event comes in July), and further reinforcing Ann Arbor’s place atop lists of innovation-centric communities.
SWA2 will beta-test an even more open source-y format than previous events; organizers are hoping to fledge a dozen new companies.
To do that, they’ve called in all the chips – on-campus and off – across the internetwork, reaching out to entrepreneurs of all stripes, and the folks who like to work with them.
Like any Web 2.0 venture, success depends on attendance/participation – and the law of two feet applies. So Ann Arbor Spark threw-in to make sure SWA2 has what they need to succeed. McKinley Commercial licensed 20K sq-ft of space. And a number of interested firms are pitching in to publicize.
The result is the opposite of a stuffy bureaucratic venture-camp (with apologies to Chuck Salley). SWA2 is barcamp meets bootcamp.
